Challenge
Delaware Nation received a Native American Business Development Institute (NABDI) grant to explore the feasibility of establishing a commercial-scale agribusiness. The objective of this grant-funded study was to evaluate the potential for the business venture to enhance revenue, create employment opportunities for Tribal members, and contribute to the economic activity of the surrounding community.
Capacity Consulting, Inc. was tasked with assessing the economic viability of a commercial enterprise focused on selling fruit, honey, and beeswax products produced at both the current “pilot” and planned orchard and apiary facilities. The study aimed to provide insights into operational requirements, go-to-market strategies, financial projections, and necessary actions for establishing and expanding the business.
The Tribe also expressed interest in expanding the commercial operation into an agritourism venture, incorporating family-friendly amenities and educational resources. Proposed services included u-pick options, a farmers’ market featuring orchard produce, a bakery, farm café, family attractions, educational activities, and various monthly and seasonal events.
Process
Over eight months, the study was coordinated with Delaware Nation’s Environmental Programs Department to assess the current “pilot” operation and future expansion plans. The project team conducted comprehensive primary and secondary research, utilizing published data and best practices from university extension services and commercial enterprises to develop a detailed operations plan for the Orchard & Apiary Products company. The Oklahoma State University Agricultural Extension program played a critical role in determining orchard composition, operational costs, and projected return on investment.
Solution
Capacity Consulting identified favorable environmental conditions for fruit tree cultivation and beekeeping, as well as potential for attracting agritourism consumers. The feasibility of the project hinges on meticulous operational planning and execution, including site preparation, species selection, education and training for cultivation and harvesting, and integrating both wholesale and retail income streams. The study also highlighted the increasing consumer demand for farm experiences and locally grown products. Capacity Consulting provided a detailed budget estimate for startup, establishment, production, and ongoing maintenance of the Orchard & Apiary Products company.
